Getting to Know the Author: Michelle Murray

sketch of MirandaHeartWelcome, Michelle. Lets learn more about you …

What is your genre? Why did you choose it?
I write poetry My poetry book Rainbows and Dreams is available on Amazon and young adult fantasy. My young adult fantasy series The Dream Walker Land of Mystica is also available on Amazon. I have always loved poetry, the freedom of expression and the power of poetry. I have also been an avid fantasy reader/lover since reading Lord of the Rings and later Harry Potter with my children. I love children, so I decided so combine my two loves and write a young adult fantasy novel.

Do you work on more than one manuscript at a time?
It depends on what comes to my mind, and what kind of ideas pop into my head. Currently, I am working on Dream Walkers Destiny, and Walking Bears back story. If a poem comes to mind, I might write that out instead.

midnights Do you work with a writing/critique group?
I did not work with a writing/critique group, but my sons did help with suggestions about my book.

Can you remember your first reading book?
22524898I can’t say I remember reading my first book, but I was an avid reader growing up, and have fond memories of reading to my boys when they were younger before bedtime.

Do you nibble on snacks while writing? If so, what is your chosen treat?
I try not to nibble while writing. I enjoy snacking on pretzels, ice cream, and chocolate.

Tidy desk or a bombsite? Describe your writing area with us.
I don’t really have a writing area. I usually write in my notebook on the couch while catching up with my children and watching tv, checking Facebook. I do like to keep things neat, but this is a challenge with a teenager and a college student at home!

Are you published in the traditional manner or self published? Share your journey.
I self-published both my poetry and fantasy book, though some of my poems have been published in anthologies. I enjoy seeing my poems in anthologies for friends/family to buy and see, and getting my name as an author out there. My fantasy book I decided to self-publish to get the story out there. I believe in this story, however self-publishing is a lot of work! It is a challenge working full time, keeping up with my two boys and keeping up with everything that needs to be done with the book!

Who would you say have been the three most influential authors in your reading/writing life?
I would say Shakespeare, his plays and poems are beautiful!
J.R.R. Tolkien as Lord of The Rings has always been one of my favourite fantasy books, plus he was a poet also just like me!
And Margaret Weiss (DragonLance Series) she lives in Wisconsin also (just like me) and her writings are awesome!

What advice would you like to share with other writers/authors with regard to preparing a manuscript?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and share your work.
Read the work over (sometimes it helps to read it aloud) and ensure everything makes sense.

If the movie rights to your novels are purchased, who would you like to play your main characters?
I think Shaley Woodley would make a great Miranda!
The wizards should be played by Sean Astin, Johnny Depp (I love Johnny Depp!),
Ian McKellan, Orlanda Bloom, Antontio Bendarez, and Leo Dicaprio

I was on my way to the supermarket, when … Do you have a tale to tell relating to an everyday, boring event?
My two sons always have fun stories about high school/college but I don’t’ think I can share them here lol!

Michelle – I really admire people who can write poetry; I wish I could. I like your advice to other writers, too. It’s so important to remember that we’re here for each other. I wish you success.
